St Martins School add Flags

As you may be aware from other posts, the theme of Refugee Week this year was ‘Walking Together’ and one of the activities we organised was the planting  of  ‘Flags of Welcome’ along a path symbolising the journey of a person seeking asylum, from the place they have had to leave, to Chester. St Martin’s Academy School is a School of Sanctuary and we were very pleased to see Eastgate class (years 4) chose to walk to the Cathedral to plant their flags.

Class teacher, Miss O’Donoghue, said ‘Eastgate were delighted to join City of Sanctuary to show our support for Refugee Week 2021 by creating an eye-catching display. The children and I are always looking for ways to take action within our community and after dedicating a half term of learning to understand the journey of refugees and their families, Eastgate felt passionate about raising awareness and making an impact. Working with Allyander and City of Sanctuary, to plant Chester Flags of Welcome, was a privilege and something the children feel proud of. We hope this beautiful display will show our community spirit and get people talking about the ways we can all make a positive impact.’

Thank you for coming Eastgate, for thinking about the difficulties refugees and their families have and for making the path longer!
