The University of Chester has announced that it is honoured to welcome Dr. Rev. Inderjit Bhogal, leading theologian and Methodist minister and founder and president of City of Sanctuary. His work in interfaith relations was recognised with an OBE in the 2005 New Year’s Honours list. Inderjit is recipient of the World Methodist Peace Award 2018.

As part of the University’s Diversity Festival, Dr Bhogal will speak about his work alongside the wider issues of citizenship, rights and struggle and much more. A main focus will be how City of Sanctuary has become a movement.

‘We look forward to hear Dr Bhogal speak about his work alongside the wider issues of citizenship, of rights and of struggle and much more. This promises to be an eye-opening and inspiring session.’

City of Sanctuary

The event has been organised in conjunction with the City of Sanctuary group in Chester.

City of Sanctuary holds the vision that the UK will be a welcoming place of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution. The City of Sanctuary group in Chester is part of a UK wide, grassroots movement working towards achieving this overall vision and is committed to:

  • Offering a positive vision of a culture of welcome and hospitality to all
  • Creating opportunities for relationships of friendship and solidarity between local people and those seeking sanctuary
  • Recognising and encouraging partnership working and network development across localities
  • Identifying opportunities for working on common cause issues within and across communities
  • Celebrating and promoting the welcome and contribution of people seeking sanctuary
  • Engaging people seeking sanctuary in decision making processes at all levels and in all activities
  • Promoting understanding of asylum and refugee issues, especially by enabling sanctuary seekers voices to be heard directly

Richard Gillespie of Chester City of Sanctuary group will also attend to speak about the group’s work in our own city.

Who should attend?

This event is taking place as part of a Social and Political Science Level 5 ‘The Individual and the State’ module, but is also open to any additional staff, students or visitors to attend, either in person or through Internet access.

This is an excellent opportunity to hear a high-profile speaker talk about an amazing and important area of work. Anyone who attends this event will leave with a greater understanding of the issues sanctuary seekers face.
