Language matters.
The words we use convey more than the meaning of the words themselves and can be used to convey a particular position or value. This is particularly noticeable in discussions concerning those seeking sanctuary in the UK. Words such as ‘migrant crisis’ suggest the migrant is the problem rather than the conditions that lead to forced migration; ‘invasion’, ‘swarm’, ‘influx’ all suggest a threat whilst ignoring the humanity of the people behind the headlines.
The charity ‘Migrants Rights Network’ are looking into the effect language has and are asking people to sign a pledge to say they will challenge unhelpful language as an act of solidarity with those seeking sanctuary. Further information and access to the pledge can be found here.
The National City of Sanctuary also has suggestions regarding appropriate language to provide respect and dignity to those looking for refuge here.
Have you signed the pledge?
